BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES June 3

— By BILL MULHOLLAND

1957

Ralph (Hop) Harrington of Pawtucket racked up his first victory of the season at the Seekonk Speedway by capturing the 50-lap Class A stock car feature. Harrington and Bill Slater of Killingly, Conn. waged a merry battle throughout most of the race and it was only in the closing two laps that Harrington was able to clinch the win before some 3,000 spectators. On the 48th lap, Harrington worked his way inside on the back stretch to take a lead he held until the checkered flag.

1967

Paul Dubois cracked out two doubles and a single driving in four runs and Steve Buba added a two-run single as Woonsocket defeated Sacred Heart Academy 8-2 – a victory which enabled the Villa Novans to take over undisputed possession of the first place in the Northern Division. Rene Demers went the route for the win allowing six hits, fanning seven and walking three. A walk and infield hits by Tom Farley and Bob Couture loaded the bases for the Beavers in the bottom of the first inning and Hank McNeil’s bunt was good for a two-run squeeze as Farley scored all the way from second on the perfectly executed play.

1977

Saint Raphael Academy’s Paul Whitehead fired a onehit, 13-strikeout, one walk gem at the Lions of Lincoln and, as the sun set slowly in the West, the Saints were crowned Metro Division champions by an 11-1 margin. Whitehead retired 17 straight batters after an unearned run in the first inning, 12 on strikeouts in clumps of three, three and five in a row. “Whitehead was just overpowering,” said a disappointed Lions coach Earl Mathewson. “He’s the best pitcher in the league.”
